School District – Microbial Investigation

30 October 2008 No Comment

CSC’s industrial hygienists conducted microbial investigation at a major school district in southern California. Apparently, the district uses modular units for classrooms, which were placed directly on soil. Few teachers, as well as, some parents complained of more than usual sickness and upper respiratory discomfort.

Our investigation included a visual, as well as, analytical sampling for laboratory analysis. The sampling was conducted over a week period, which included two episodes of the sampling in a day; mornings and afternoons. The results revealed no unusual mold spore counts, when indoor concentrations were compared with outdoor concentrations in a sampling episode. Also, no visible mold growth was reported in all areas included in the investigation.

CSC recommended that the temperature and humidity be monitored at all times. As both promote mold growth. Also, we recommended that all modular units be lifted of the soil and placed on non-organic concrete/steel foundation.
