Petroleum Products: Toxicology & Risk

Major Oil Company

Southeastern U.S.

Provided consulting support to a major oil company involved in litigation at an old oil storage and refining site. The case involved hundreds of plaintiffs claiming a wide variety of health effects as well as fear of future effects. The characteristics of the very weathered petroleum materials present at the site provided a unique challenge due to the lack of toxicity data on such weathered materials. Tasks performed included assessing risks associated with the material, design of sampling plans for site characterization, review and analysis of soil data, and review and analysis of medical data on individual plaintiffs.
